On our last trip to Cabo, we decided we were going to do things a little differently this time. On a previous journey to Cabo, I experienced my nightmare of eating and being sick for months. It took my husband 20 years to get me to return to Cabo and even then I would only venture out from our ship.
Cabo San Lucas doesn’t have the lush jungle-like-feel that many of the Mexican Islands have, instead Cabo is mostly very dry with rock formations. Still beautiful, but without that fresh feeling that is often missed when you arrive in Cabo if you haven’t experienced Cabo before. We actually considered staying on the boat for this port thinking that the crazy party atmosphere wasn’t really our style anymore. What we longed for was relaxation, good service, and a nice dip in a beautiful sandy beach laden sea.
So instead of hopping off our tender and meandering through the busy and expensive Americanized restaurant and shops in the streets of Cabo, with over-priced menus, and screaming 20-year-olds, we decided instead to hang a left at the boardwalk and hop on our quickest water taxi out of town.
Don’t try to walk it…trust me.
The water taxis in Cabo will cost you approximately 5 American dollars per person one way, to venture out to El Medano Ejidal. However it isn’t just a quick jaunt, it’s an actual tour of the area which was really most enjoyable. Not only did we see the famous rock formations and experience the Sea of Cortez joining up with a Pacific Ocean, but we got to enjoy the sea breeze, the bustling city from a safe distance, hungry pelicans, and seals hitching rides on back of fishermen’s boats, which was all really amusing and informative.
After our tour, we were dropped off at the beach at El Medano Ejidal, where the music still played from the many Shoreline restaurants. People still walked the beaches, frolicked in the sand and body surfed in the sea, yet some peace was still maintained.
Although we didn’t spend our time going from an expensive shop to an expensive shop in Cabo San Lucas, the shopping still came to us through the many locals selling their Wares on the beach. We actually did end up buying a few items for reasonable prices. However, what really met our expectations were the many bars and restaurants that lined the beaches. How wonderful it was to be able to sit in a lawn chair with our feet planted in the sand while the shopping came to us, and the food, beer and cocktails service was always available and the sun beat on our skin while the warm air felt so refreshing. We could even take a dip in the water mid taco!
We started off at The Sandbar Grill where we had a drink, maybe a couple of drinks, while sitting on the beach. Nobody bothered us about continuing to sit in their chairs even though we weren’t reordering beverages or food.
We then moved on to the Omega Sports Bar where we enjoyed the most fabulous guacamole, fish tacos, Etc and experienced fantastic service. They had a special going on for two fish tacos and a beer for 6 American dollars, which was pretty crazy for Cabo. We later returned to the Sandbar where on the third floor they had a legit massage facility, where one could receive an open-air massage beachfront. It was amazing, I think it cost us around $40 or $45 each to have a side by side 1-hour massage while we listened the waves kiss the shoreline and felt the tropical breeze float over our skin.
A word to the wise, when dealing with water taxis don’t ever pay for your return ride thinking the ticket that you received will get you back to your ship. Only pay your $5 one way because our experience was that there was no boat waiting for us to take us back to our ship’s tender. Thank goodness we had left plenty of time and there were other water taxis available to take us back for new inexpensive fare. So the suggestion would be to pay $5 each way separately.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Cabo San Lucas. Swimming in the sea was wonderful, the sandy beaches beautiful and we felt like we took from Cabo the best things that it had to offer us… and we did it on a dime.
